Considering laser hair removal near Preston? A consultation is the place to check whether it suits your skin and hair, discuss realistic results and plan treatment safely. At Defyne Aesthetics in Longridge, we use the Cynosure Elite MPX, which offers Alexandrite (755 nm) and Nd:YAG (1064 nm) wavelengths. The choice of laser and settings depends on an individual assessment.

What happens at a laser hair removal consultation?

We discuss the area you would like treated, your hair colour and thickness, your natural skin tone, recent sun exposure or tanning, and relevant health and medication history. Some medicines can make skin more sensitive to light, so bring an up-to-date list of prescribed and over-the-counter products. We explain the likely course of treatment, costs and possible side effects before you decide whether to proceed.

A small patch test may be appropriate to assess how your skin and hair respond and to help select settings. A patch test reduces uncertainty; it cannot promise that side effects will never occur. Your practitioner will explain the clinic’s preparation instructions and the interval before any full treatment.

Which hair and skin types can be treated?

Laser hair reduction works by targeting pigment in hair. Darker hair usually responds better, while white, grey, very blonde and red hair may respond poorly. People with darker skin can also be considered for treatment, but choosing an appropriate wavelength and settings is especially important. Our Elite MPX has an Alexandrite and an Nd:YAG option, allowing a tailored assessment across a range of skin tones. It does not mean every person or every hair colour is suitable.

Recent tanning and fake tan matter too. Pigment in tanned skin can increase the risk of unwanted skin changes, so a session may need to be postponed. Tell us about holidays, sunbeds and tanning products before treatment.

What results should you expect?

Think of laser treatment as long-term hair reduction, rather than a guarantee that every hair disappears permanently. Hair grows in cycles, so several sessions are usually needed, and the number and spacing depend on the area and individual response. Some people need maintenance sessions. Your consultation is the time to discuss what a realistic result looks like for you.

What are the risks?

Temporary redness, tenderness or swelling can occur. Less commonly, skin may become lighter or darker; scarring is uncommon but possible. The risk can be higher with a suntan or unsuitable settings. We discuss these risks, your skin history and aftercare before treatment, and you should contact the clinic if you develop an unexpected reaction.

How do you prepare?

Until you have individual instructions, avoid waxing and plucking the area because laser needs pigment in the hair follicle to target. Shaving between sessions is generally possible. Avoid sunbeds and fake tan, protect the area from sun exposure, and tell your practitioner about medicines and skin products. Follow the preparation plan given at your consultation, including when to shave and what to keep off the skin on treatment day.
