Dermal fillers are a product range aiming at substituting volume. This can be volume that is lost due to natural processes or volume where it would enhance features of the face like the popular lip enhancement. They can also smooth out deep wrinkles and support the effect of anti wrinkle injections. They can even improve or restore the shape of the face where volume has been lost like the cheek area.

Modern fillers have hyaluronic acid as their main ingredients. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the body which plays an essential role in the hydration of the skin. The natural production of hyaluronic acid declines as we age and lines appear as skin becomes less hydrated. Therefore fillers are a natural way to replenish the skins hydration, giving your face volume and helping to smooth out lines.

Over the time the hyaluronic acid degrades again and the effect fades. It is important to choose the right filler for the right indication. There is no one best product. There is only the best product for the individual’s treatment requirements.

On your initial consultation at the Preston Clinic we will identify what exactly you are wishing to achieve. According to this we will devise a treatment plan for you.
There are only very few absolute contraindications for fillers. Treatment cannot be carried out if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have a known allergy against one of the constituents of the product
  • You have a current infection in the treated area like cold sores or active acne

Treatment with fillers can be uncomfortable. Depending on the treatment area we might use a numbing crème. Some areas will not be sufficiently pain free with the application of topical crèmes (for example the lips). In this case we can offer local anaesthetic injections. These are no different to the injections you would receive at the dentist. We can offer this service due to the fact that our practitioner is a trained and experienced dentist.

You will see the effect immediately after the treatment. Depending on the fillers and treated area the results can last between 6 and 18 months.

Certain side effects are very common. This includes redness and mild swelling. Depending on the treated area you might experience bruising and some bleeding, particularly if you had a couple of injections. You might also feel some tenderness and residual “lumps and bumps” which will smooth out within a couple of days.

Other side effects are extremely rare. Should you therefore experience any effects not mentioned above we would like you to contact us so we can ensure everything is within the normal side effects.

To allow the fillers to deliver the best results we advice you to:

  • NOT exert any pressure on the treated area or any other manipulation
  • NOT exercise excessively
  • NOT expose yourself to extreme heat or cold and sunshine for 2 weeks
  • NOT drink alcohol for 24 hours drink plenty of water to help the filler to hydrate
