WHAT CAN AESTHETIC MEDICINE DO FOR YOU?

Aesthetic Medicine is a fast evolving field and will hopefully bring the answer to many problems generated by the natural process of ageing and exposing our skin to the hazards the environment and our lifestyles can hold.

New treatments and efficient agents are being developed every day. Research is being undertaken to evaluate how different treatments can be combined to benefit each other. They need to be understood and performed well to deliver the desired outcome. Click on the options below to learn more.

ANTI WRINKLE INJECTIONS

Our facial muscles move our skin and enable us to show expressions. Over the years our skin looses elasticity causing lines, wrinkles and skin sagging.

Some of these effects can be treated very successfully with anti wrinkle injections. Other effects might need a different type of treatment i.e. dermal fillers.

Anti wrinkle injections such as botox are extremely useful in the prevention of these signs of ageing. By relaxing the muscles they keep the skin smooth and supple. Repeated use can help to reduce the signs of ageing, but not always eliminate them without the combination of other treatments.

At our Preston clinic we use market leading botulinum toxins to partly inactivate the muscles which cause the lines to appear over time to create a smoother look.

DERMAL FILLERS

Dermal fillers are a product range aiming at substituting volume. This can be volume that is lost due to natural processes or volume where it would enhance features of the face like the popular lip enhancement. They can also smooth out deep wrinkles and support the effect of anti wrinkle injections. They can even improve or restore the shape of the face where volume has been lost like the cheek area. Modern fillers have hyaluronic acid as their main ingredients. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the body which plays an essential role in the hydration of the skin. The natural production of hyaluronic acid declines as we age and lines appear as skin becomes less hydrated. Therefore fillers are a natural way to replenish the skins hydration, giving your face volume and helping to smooth out lines.

Over the time the hyaluronic acid degrades again and the effect fades. It is important to choose the right filler for the right indication. There is no one best product. There is only the best product for the individual’s treatment requirements.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Many people suffer from either excessive hair growth or are simply tired of regular shaving and waxing. Both of these techniques can be time consuming and painful.

Lasers can offer a permanent solution to unwanted and unsightly hair growth on the face and body. Many techniques have been developed to achieve the same results, but real medical lasers surpass all other techniques in efficiency. Efficiency is described as how quickly the results can be achieved, the total reduction of hair growth, long term effects and the occurrence of side effects like pain and burns.

Due to the high energy a laser can emit the treatment is the most permanent solution. At the same time the energy is directed exactly at where it needs to be without damaging any other structures.

LASER FACIAL

The laser facial treatment features revolutionary technology to comfortably achieve a more youthful, tightened and toned appearance, including wrinkle reduction around your eyes and mouth, with literally no downtime.

At Defyne Aesthetics we’re proud to offer the Elite MPX technology that uses combined energies to effectively and gently tighten your skin.

This laser technology heats the dermal tissue within the target treatment area. This stimulates collagen production and produces a firming effect in elastic skin. Fine wrinkles are reduced, noticeable lifting can be observed and the texture of your skin becomes smoother, more luminous and toned.

You can also treat other areas of the body, such as hands, arms, and décolletage.

MEDICAL MICRO NEEDLING

Derma FNS™ micro needling uses vertical insertions to create thousands of tiny holes in the skin causing the release of growth factors which stimulate the breakdown of old fibrous collagen and stimulate new collagen and elastin development, a process that leads to skin tightening and remodelling.

Derma FNS™ results are comparable and as effective to ablative treatments such as Fraxel and Laser Resurfacing, but at a fraction of the cost and with less downtime. The biggest advantage is the safety when it comes to changes in pigmentation. Fraxel treatment is very risky on certain skin types while Micro needling is relatively safe.

The treatment is typically carried out at a 4 weeks intervals. Usually you should expect 3-4 sessions to see results.

MICRODERMABRASION

Microdermabrasion is a facial procedure that deeply exfoliates the surface of your skin. Professional microdermabrasion treatments are completely different from at-home microdermabrasion kits, which are more like fine scrubs. While at-home microdermabrasion kits can make your skin feel very soft and smooth, the results do not compare to professional microdermabrasion treatments. Professional microdermabrasion is much stronger and can reduce the appearance of light wrinkles, scars, and hyperpigmentation. They help even out your skin tone and rejuvenate a dull complexion.

Professional microdermabrasion procedures are usually recommended for anti-aging or fading dark marks, but some dermatologists will suggest them as acne treatments. Microdermabrasion can help with active acne, but the extent of improvement depends on how your skin responds. It would probably take multiple treatment sessions as well.

HYPERHIDROSIS

Hyperhidrosis is a common condition where a person sweats excessively much more than the body needs to regulate its temperature.

Excessive sweating doesn’t usually pose a serious threat to a person’s health, but it can be embarrassing and distressing. The inconvenience of it can also have a negative impact on your quality of life.

There is no set way of defining excessive sweating, but if sweating is interfering with your daily life and normal activities, you may have hyperhidrosis.

Many people with the condition are too embarrassed to seek medical help or believe that nothing can be done to improve their symptoms. However, there is help available.

ONYCHOMYCOSIS

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail. It is the most common disease of the nails and accounts for about half of all nail abnormalities. This condition may affect toenails or fingernails, but toenail infections are particularly common. It occurs in about 10% of the adult population.
The risk of infection increases with age with about 48% of those older than 70 suffering from it. The most common symptom of a fungal nail infection is the nail becoming thickened and discoloured: white, black, yellow or green. As the infection progresses the nail can become brittle, with pieces breaking off or coming away from the toe or finger completely.

If left untreated, the skin can become inflamed and painful underneath and around the nail. Fungi from the nails may precipitate secondary bacterial infections, cellulitis and chronic urticaria. Infected toenails can also act as a reservoir for fungi, allowing the transmission to other areas of the body or even other people.

PHOTOREJUVENATION

This treatment features revolutionary technology to achieve a more youthful, toned appearance, including wrinkle reduction around your eyes and mouth, even skin tone and reduction of redness and blemishes.

The laser technology heats the dermal tissue under the top layer of the skin. It also breaks down pigments like sun spots and coagulates tiny vessels. This stimulates collagen production and produces a firming effect in lax skin. Fine wrinkles are reduced, noticeable lifting can be observed and the texture of your skin becomes smoother, more luminous and toned. At the same time your skin tone will look a lot more even, one of the typical signs of youthful skin.

Other popular areas that can be treated with the same method are hands, arms and décolletage.

PIGMENTED LESIONS

Nearly everyone has a pigmented lesion of some type, be it a freckle, sun spot or birthmark. It is fair to say with age, congenital factors and sun exposure that these pigments can become more visible. Typically these pigmented lesions vary in size, shape, depth, colour and location on the body or face.

Pigmentation removal works very well with laser treatment, though an initial consultation with our laser specialist will highlight the options available and identify the most effective method to suit your skin type. Traditionally treatments have revolved around fading creams, cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen) and chemical peels.  When successful, they can sometimes leave behind a white patch which may be more obvious than the original problem.

Newer treatments such as lasers and IPL’s are much more specific.  The light is able to specifically target the pigment and destroy it. This is done gently, so that not all pigment in the area is affected, and the background colour is preserved.

ROSACEA

Rosacea is a common rash, normally found on the central part of the face of a middle aged person. A tendency to flush easily is followed by persistent redness on the cheeks, chin, forehead and nose, and by crops of small inflamed red bumps and pus spots.

Although it is one of the most common skin disorders, rosacea remains undiagnosed in millions of people around the globe. In fact, most people remain completely unaware of this potentially life-disruptive condition. Although it can cause significant psychological, social and occupational problems, rosacea goes largely unrecognised, and more importantly, untreated.

Rosacea can cause a red-faced look and its effects are often mistaken for acne or alcohol abuse. Severe symptoms of rosacea can result in self-confidence and self-esteem issues, with those afflicted cancelling both social and professional engagements due to sudden flare-ups.

THREAD VEINS

Thread veins are tiny dilated blood vessels near the skin surface. They look like fine red wiggly lines, or they can occasionally appear purple. The medical term for them is telangiectasia. Some people refer to them as ‘spider veins’.

Unfortunately it is age and it is very likely all of us at some point in our lives will be subjected to them. Research suggests at least one in five women in their 20s will have a thread vein, a figure that rises to around half by the age of forty. Pregnancy can also speed up the process of developing these little red lines. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy and menopause promote their development. This is one of the reasons why women seem to get them over men. Family genetics also play a fundamental part in the problem.

Other causes include too much sunbathing, exposure to wind, extreme temperatures, jobs that involve prolonged standing and medications, all of which can be factored in to why you may have them. They do not impose a health threat, but they can be a serious cosmetic problem.
